From The Eyes of an OWL on College Campus Today

The view on EKU's (Eastern Kentucky University) campus today is dramatically different from the view I experienced as an 18 year old freshman back in 2000!  A lot of things were different in the world back then.  Sure, some new buildings had been erected, older buildings had been renovated or re purposed. Technology had become a much larger part of campus with campus wide WIFI and many more computer labs with instructors using laptops as instruction aides in nearly every class.  Parking police or as they are referred to by some as parking nazis still go out to write as many tickets as possible.  However, that is not the concern I have for the future as I observe activity on campus today!

I am a non-traditional student or an OWL which stands for Older Wiser Learners.  This means that I do not fit in the 18-24 age range and I do not live on campus.  Other criteria for consideration would be those married with kids, those with full time jobs, veterans.  Since I experienced college life as an 18 year old, and experiencing it today 16 years later as a 34 year old, I am noticing activity that raises concerns.  It is enough of a concern for me to take the time to write this piece.

Chiefly among my concerns is the absence of a core belief structure on campus.  Ever since the 9/11 attacks, I have noticed a decline in people being willing to come together with a common set of values.  It is almost like being willing to stand for common good has become something to vilify.  As a result, people have over time adopted this "free thinker" ideology that possesses people to believe that it is wrong to have and practice a particular set of beliefs.  This has led to a growing competition for young minds on campus.  From the benign traveling gypsies, to the offensive fundamentalists.  But due to the non-compliance to a set of common beliefs, the university allows all kinds to come on to campus and put on display their "religion".  There is even a guy that at least twice a semester comes on to campus for the sole purpose of telling everyone they are going to hell.  No doubt that it is important for people to be tolerant of other cultures, of other beliefs.  There is a difference in my opinion between tolerating the existence of various cultures and beliefs, and refusing to have an identity of your own.  That is what is most troubling to me is that young people on college campus today stand for nothing in common with each other.  There is no identity that would naturally cause bonds to take place.  People are so engrossed with their cell phones and tablets and twitter and Facebook that its become almost awkward to walk forward and meet someone's eyes as they walk by you.

Another one of my observations as I continue my pursuit of my Bachelors degree which I will have after spring of 2016 is that young college students today care not for how they present themselves in public nor do they care how they act and speak to others.  Nary a conversation could be overheard without some profanity being let loose every 10-20 seconds.  Today January 20th being the first day of classes for the Spring of 2015 semester, I got to observe once again just how many people clearly dress to stand out. If its not clothing with outrageous words on them, its young females wearing extra bright red lipstick on a completely pale face.  I don't write this to try to offend people.  I write this because I have concerns about how society will function in the future with these people in college now slated to become the next wave of workers, policy makers, think tankers, etc.

I have a perspective that honestly not many people have because most people only go to college once in their life and then they are on with their careers and the rest of their lives.  They typically don't even think twice about the culture of their campus and how it has changed or how much it has changed.  There are some encouraging aspects to the youth of today that I did not notice with my generation in college.  That is a healthy distrust for government.  I know it sounds crazy considering it was our youth that was behind getting President Obama elected, but our youth today seriously has a problem with big obtrusive government.  They want to smoke, guess what, they can't smoke on campus.  They want to vape, guess what, they cannot vape on campus.  If one thing can be said about our youth today, its that they are being subjected whether they acknowledge it or not, to more government and more restrictions on their liberty and freedom than any generation in our relatively young US History.  Only they can fulfill the goal of recognizing this and acting to stop the next generation from being treated worse.  Even at age 34, I may be too old to act to save the next generation from being subjected to even more government policies and restrictions than today!  I could never have imagined being told back in 2000 that there were "free-speech zones".  Yet today in 2015 these young Americans are being told that they not only have to register their demonstration, but also have to reserve time and be restricted to a physically limited area in which to hold their demonstration.  Makes me wonder what sort of restrictions will those only 2 years old now will have to abide by when they become 18 years old and experience college life for the first time.

What I hope you get out of this is that while the future is uncertain, there are certainties that are bound to crop up due to the current state of our youth on college campuses.  We will likely see a future with less in person interactions.  We can expect to continue to see a decline in proper English being used in speech and in literature.  We can expect to see the continued decline of traditional American values.  We can expect to experience a prolonged period of mediocre to average quality of work.  We can expect political correctness to continue to poison and destroy American Culture.  We can continue to expect to see a politician even more brazen than before in attacking our Constitutional Rights.  While I paint a bleak picture for the future, It doesn't mean that we should give up our fight!  It doesn't mean that we should just lay down and take it.  It means that our fight is in perpetuation.  It means that we must adapt and overcome these new obstacles.  IT MEANS WE MUST PERSEVERE!!
